I had an interview with Morgan Lewis today here in Houston.  I’m excited, as getting a law firm job in the first summer is becoming harder and harder.  I got the interview through the Houston Bar Association’s Minority Recruiting program.  If you are a minority, I suggest this program to everybody.

How mediocre was my first semester?  I finished at exactly 50% in the class standing.

Since it is now winter break, I will post about my first semester.

For starters I’ve only gotten one grade back.  I got a B+ in Civil Procedure.  It isn’t bad, but it isn’t great.  Since the curve is set at a B, I’m at least in the top half of the class.

School is starting to load up and explode in my face.  I basically have to start studying for finals now.  Good thing is my memo will be done by Monday, so after the Legal Writing  final on Thursday, that class is done.  Then I have to worry about the other three.  I’m prety sure I’m not ‘getting’ it all.
Contracts – open book, open everything take home 48 hour final – just means expectations are higher
Torts – single sheet front back of notes final – torts seems a bit wishy washy, and it’ll probably all come down to exam organization and presentation
Civil Procedure – closed book -  have to memorize all the rules, and then apply – this may be too big of a hill

Our section (section B) is playing in a charity softball tournament on Saturday. I think it will be a good time to get to know my classmates better. So far everybody has been nice and nobody is cut throat for grades. Of course, finals season is coming soon, so the attitude may change.

The great thing about being at a law school is you are surrounded by smart people.  During lunch, I’d say more than 50% of the time, there is always a speaker or organization speaking on various topics.  Today, Paul Rusesabagina, who is better known as the guy who Don Cheadle plays in the movie Hotel Rwanda, was here at the law school.  Sadly we got out of torts late and the room was full.  A police officer was outside saying the room had too many people in it.  So I missed out.

It is the beginning of October.  The problem with law school, and only having ONE test at the end to determine your grade for the entire semester, is that I have no feedback about how I’m doing.  I don’t know if I’m really getting it, or if it is some illusion.  I need to start outlining in Torts and Contracts.  Preparing for class is great, but putting it all together afterwards seems to be more important.

Cases are boring.  I am however reading a case about River Phoenix’s death and the insurance policy problems that followed.  At least this is a little better.

Thing v. La Chusa is a case I have to read for torts tonight.  It made me laugh.  The first thing I thought about was
